GE Range Hood Grease Filters: Cleaning Schedule and Fire Risk

Grease collects in a range hood long before it looks dirty, and it burns. A simple cleaning routine keeps the fan pulling and lowers the chance of a grease fire.

A range hood catches the grease that rises from cooking. Over months, that grease coats the filters and the fan housing, and it ignites far more readily than most people expect. Cleaning the filters is the single most useful thing you can do for a GE hood.

How Often

There is no one number. A household that fries and sears often needs to clean the filters monthly; one that mostly boils and bakes can wait longer. Look at the metal: if grease has darkened it or drips from the filter edge, it is overdue.

Cleaning Steps

  1. Turn the hood off and let the light cool.
  2. Slide or unclip the filters, following your owner manual.
  3. Soak them in hot water with a degreasing dish soap, scrub gently and rinse well.
  4. Let them dry fully before reinstalling.
  5. Wipe the visible hood interior with the same soap.

Some filters are dishwasher safe and some are not, so check your manual first. Charcoal filters used by recirculating hoods are usually replaced, not washed.

When the Fan Seems Weak

  • Dirty filters reduce airflow.
  • A blocked or kinked duct to the outside holds back smoke.
  • A damper that sticks closed at the roof or wall cap stops the exhaust.
  • A fan wheel coated with grease spins slower and louder.

What Not To Do

Never leave a hot pan unattended under the hood. If a grease fire starts, cover the pan with a lid and turn off the burner; do not use water.

What Filters Cannot Fix

If clean filters do not improve the airflow, the fan motor, wiring or duct may need attention. That cannot be judged by looking at the filter alone.
