What F3 / F4 means

On GE, Profile and Café ranges and wall ovens with electronic oven controls, F3 and F4 usually mean the oven sensor is not giving the control a usable reading. The sensor is the thin probe inside the oven cavity that tells the control how hot it is. When the reading is off or missing the control cannot regulate heat, so the oven may not preheat or may stop the cycle and show the code.

Common causes of F3 / F4

  • Oven temperature sensor reading out of range
  • Sensor wiring or plug connection at the back of the cavity
  • Control board input that reads the sensor
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Switch the oven off and let it cool. 2. Switch the circuit breaker or fuse off for a minute or two, then restore the power. 3. See if the display is clear and the oven preheats. 4. If the code persists, service is needed. 5. Do not pull on or bend the sensor probe inside the oven.

! Why to stop there
  • A sensor that reads wrong and a board that reads it wrong look the same on the display.
  • We compare the sensor against a known reading before ordering a part.
  • Handling the probe yourself can bend it or loosen its connection.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F3 / F4F3 / F4 questions
What is the oven sensor and where is it?

It is a slim metal probe, usually on the back wall of the oven cavity. It tells the control the temperature. If that reading is out of range, the control shows F3 or F4.

Can I just bend the sensor back into place?

Please do not. The probe is delicate and its position matters less than its electrical reading. Bending it can damage the wire. We test the reading and give you a written price first.

The oven heats but the code appears later. Why?

The sensor reading may be drifting only once hot. That is a common pattern for these codes. Our test covers a hot oven, not just a cold one, so intermittent cases are caught.
