What 888 / 8888 / PF means

On GE and Profile microwaves, including over-the-range and countertop models such as the JVM3160, JVM7195, JES1657 and PVM9179 series, the display may show 888, 8888 or PF. These appear after installation, or after power is restored following an outage. They are not breakdown codes. The microwave is telling you that it lost power and needs to be reset. You will see the characters on the display, and the clock may have gone blank or reverted until you touch a pad.

Common causes of 888 / 8888 / PF

  • New installation with power just applied
  • Power outage or brownout in the house
  • Breaker switched off and back on
  • Plug pulled and reinserted

1. Touch CLEAR/OFF or CANCEL/OFF once. 2. If the display still shows the characters, touch the same pad again. 3. Set the clock if your model has one. 4. Try a short heating test with a cup of water. 5. If the characters return without any outage, book a visit.
