What F3 means
On GE Profile countertop microwaves in the PEM31 series, F3 means a key on the control panel has been active for more than 60 seconds. This can happen when liquid sits on the touch panel and the control reads it as a held key. The microwave stops responding and displays F3. Full model numbers include the PEM31SFSS, PEM31DFWW and PEM31DFBB. On other GE microwaves F3 is described as a shorted touch pad panel, which is the same area.
Common causes of F3
- Liquid or residue on the touch panel
- Panel pressed by an object or a stuck overlay
- Touch pad circuit reading a held key
1. Press Cancel/Off to clear the display. 2. Wipe the control panel and dry it thoroughly. 3. When cleaning, never let cleaner run into the panel edges. 4. Try a short test heating a cup of water; if F3 returns, stop using the microwave.
- Whether the panel only needs to dry or the touch pad itself is damaged stays unknown until it is tested
- We check the touch pad circuit and the control connection before quoting a repair

Why did my PEM31 show F3 after I wiped it down?
Liquid on the control panel can read as a key held down. Drying the panel thoroughly and pressing Cancel/Off usually clears it, and it is the first thing we would try ourselves.
Does F3 mean the microwave is broken?
Not necessarily. It means a key looked held for over 60 seconds. If it appears on a dry panel with nothing touching it, the touch pad itself needs testing.
How can I clean the panel without causing F3?
Use a damp, not wet, cloth and dry the panel right away. Avoid spraying cleaner directly onto the controls, since it can seep under the pads.
