What Filter Status LED amber means
On GE and GE Profile refrigerators with the XWFE RFID water filter and a Filter Status LED (side-by-side GSS25, GSE25 and PSE25, and bottom-freezer and French-door GNE, GBE and GFE, 2018 and newer), an amber Filter Status LED means the filter is reaching its expired state. Water still dispenses. It is an early reminder so you can have a replacement ready before the LED turns red.
Common causes of Filter Status LED amber
- Filter nearing the end of its service life
- Remaining filter life low
1. Press the Filter Status pad to show the remaining filter life. 2. Order or get a replacement XWFE filter. 3. Replace it when convenient. 4. Check that the LED clears after the new filter is detected. Keep the new filter ready.
- If the LED stays amber after a new filter, the refrigerator may not be detecting the new filter.
- We check the filter seat and the reader.
- This is seldom a repair; if it is, a written price comes first.

Why is the Filter Status LED amber?
The filter is reaching its expired state. It is an early reminder. It gives you a head start on the replacement. It is only an early alert for you.
How do I see how much life is left?
Press the Filter Status pad. The display shows the remaining filter life. The screen shows the percentage of life left, so you can plan. Press it any time to check.
Can I wait to replace it?
For a short time, yes, but the LED will turn red when it expires. Plan the replacement. Water keeps flowing normally in the meantime. Do not ignore the reminder for long.
