What Err means
On GE and GE Profile refrigerators with the XWFE RFID water filter and a Filter Status LED (side-by-side GSS25, GSE25 and PSE25, and bottom-freezer and French-door GNE, GBE and GFE, 2018 and newer), Err means the filter is not detected or there is no communication with it. Water is disabled, the Filter Status LED flashes red and a buzzer sounds. It is a filter message and does not point at the main control.
Common causes of Err
- Wrong filter fitted, such as an XWF instead of an XWFE
- Filter label scratched or damaged so it cannot be read
- Filter not fully seated in the housing
1. Verify you have the XWFE filter and not the XWF. 2. Verify there are no scratches or filter label damage. 3. Replace the filter if the label shows damage. 4. Reseat it fully and see whether Err clears. Close the door afterward.
- If a correct, undamaged XWFE still shows Err, the filter reader in the housing is the area we test.
- We check the reader and its connection.
- Any replacement waits for your written approval of the price.

What does Err mean on my refrigerator water display?
The refrigerator cannot detect the filter or talk to it. Water is disabled until it can. The refrigerator reads a chip in the filter label to confirm it is the right one.
Which filter should I use?
The XWFE, not the XWF. The label must be undamaged, since the refrigerator reads it. A scratch on the label can stop the reading. Check both before you buy another filter.
Is the main control broken?
Probably not. Err is about the filter. If a new, correct filter does not clear it, we test the reader. If you cannot tell which filter you have, read the label or call us and we will help you identify it.
Still seeing Err?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
