What F55 means

F55 on 2025 and newer GE Profile GeoSpring PF and PH heat pump water heaters means the electronic expansion valve is out of range, with a probable refrigerant leak. The valve meters refrigerant into the evaporator and moves through a set range as conditions change. When it has to open or close beyond that range to hold control, the unit reports F55. You may notice weak heat pump heating and slower recovery.

Common causes of F55

  • Low refrigerant from a probable leak
  • Electronic expansion valve operation
  • Valve wiring or drive signal
  • Evaporator temperature sensing
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Have the displayed code and the label's model number ready for the call. 2. Make sure the air inlet and outlet are open and nothing is stacked against the unit. 3. Do not open the unit or handle the refrigerant lines. 4. Call us to test the valve and look for a leak.

! Why to stop there
  • The valve moving out of range is often a response to something else, like low refrigerant.
  • We test the valve and its drive before replacing it.
  • A written price comes before sealed-system work.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F55F55 questions
What does the expansion valve do?

It meters refrigerant into the evaporator. The control moves it to hold the right conditions, and F55 means it ran out of its normal range while trying to do that.

How do F55 and F56 differ?

They are close. F55 is the valve out of range with a probable leak. F56 adds a refrigerant leak test as a possible source. We check both when either appears.

Can I clear it by restarting?

We do not recommend repeated restarts. The condition will return if the cause is still there, so we diagnose it instead and give you a written price for any repair.
