What F76 means

F76 on 2025-and-newer GE Profile GeoSpring PF and PH water heaters means the voltage is too low at power-up. When the unit starts, it measures the incoming voltage, and a low reading triggers F76. The listed cause to look at is probable miswiring of the unit. You may see the water heater fail to start, shut down quickly, or never reach its heating cycle, particularly after installation or electrical work.

Common causes of F76

  • Probable miswire at the unit
  • Loose connection at the terminal block or breaker
  • Supply voltage problem to the circuit
  • Voltage sensing on the control
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Have the code and the model number at hand for the call. 2. If the unit is newly installed or wiring was changed, tell us about it. 3. Switch the breaker off and leave it off. 4. Do not open the wiring area. Call us to check the wiring.

! Why to stop there
  • A miswire and a weak supply look the same at power-up, so we check both.
  • We confirm connections at the unit and at the breaker.
  • If the problem lies outside the heater, we say so and tell you what is needed.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F76F76 questions
What does low voltage at power-up mean?

The control measured less voltage than it needs when it first got power. That is most often a wiring problem rather than a worn part, so we begin with the connections.

Is F76 the same as F60?

They are related to the supply but different. F60 is an AC detection failure and F76 is low voltage at power-up. Both lead us to check the wiring first.

Can I try running it again?

We would not keep trying. If the wiring is wrong, repeated attempts do no good and can be unsafe. Leave the breaker off and call us so we can check it.
