What Dirty Filter (F14) means
On the 2014-2016 GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters in the GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ series, Dirty Filter, also shown as F14, says the air filter is dirty. The heat pump pulls room air through that filter, and a clogged one restricts airflow across the evaporator. If the message returns even after the filter has been cleaned, a refrigerant leak becomes a possibility. The same F14 reads differently on the newer PF and PH platform, so this page applies to the earlier series only.
Common causes of Dirty Filter (F14)
- Dust and lint loading on the air filter
- Whether the filter was reseated correctly after cleaning
- Airflow around the inlet and outlet of the unit
- Signs of a refrigerant problem if the message keeps returning
1. Clean the air filter as the owner's manual shows. 2. Put the filter back fully seated. 3. Clear the space around the unit so air can move in and out. 4. If Dirty Filter returns after cleaning, schedule service.
- A clean filter that still triggers the message points past dust, and that is where a refrigerant leak is possible.
- We check airflow and the heat pump's behavior before any sealed-system conclusion.
- A message that survives a clean filter earns a closer look at airflow and the sealed system.

How often should I clean the filter?
The manual describes how to clean it, and a dusty garage or laundry area will load it faster. Check it whenever you see the message, and any time the unit seems louder than usual.
I cleaned it and F14 came back. Why?
A repeating message after cleaning can mean the filter is still restricted, the sensing is off, or there is a refrigerant leak. We separate those on a visit.
Does a dirty filter damage the water heater?
It makes the heat pump work harder and less efficiently. Cleaning it is the owner's job and costs nothing, so do that first before booking.
