What F16 means
F16 appears on some 2014-2016 GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters in the GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ series when the powered anode rod is depleted. The anode rod protects the inside of the tank from rust, and this series senses its condition electronically. With F16 on the display, the tank is losing that protection, which matters over time for tank life rather than for tonight's hot water. Only models fitted with that sensing show this code.
Common causes of F16
- Condition of the anode rod and its connection
- The anode rod wiring back to the control
- Water chemistry that wears the rod quickly
- The control's anode sensing input
1. Keep using hot water normally; F16 is not an immediate heating shutdown. 2. Do not drain the tank or remove any rod yourself. 3. Check the area around the tank for dampness and tell us if you find any. 4. Schedule service so the rod is inspected.
- A depleted rod, a loose connection and a sensing error all show the same code.
- We inspect the rod and its wiring so we know which one it is.
- A new rod is only worth buying once the old one and its wiring have been inspected.

Is F16 an emergency?
No. It is a wear warning for tank protection, not a heating shutdown. It is still worth acting on soon, because a tank that rusts through must be replaced entirely rather than repaired.
Can I replace the anode rod myself?
We do not recommend it. On this series the rod connects to the tank and to the control's sensing, and the tank must be handled carefully. Leave it for a visit, and we quote the work in writing first.
Do all GeoSpring units show F16?
Only some models with the powered anode feature show it. If your unit never displays F16, that is normal and not a sign of a hidden problem, so there is nothing to look for.

A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
