What F20 means
On 2014-2016 GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters in the GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ series, F20 means the condensate drain pan port is clogged. The heat pump pulls moisture out of the air, and that water has to leave through the drain. When the port blocks, water backs up and the unit alarms. You will hear the alarm and see F20. The same F20 reads differently on the newer PF and PH platform, so this applies only to the earlier series.
Common causes of F20
- Debris or slime in the condensate drain port
- Kinks or blockage in the drain line or hose
- Level of the unit and slope of the drain path
- Water collecting in the pan under the heat pump
1. Clean the condensate drain port as the owner's manual describes. 2. Straighten any drain hose and make sure its end is not submerged or blocked. 3. Press any button to silence the alarm if needed. 4. Look for water on the floor around the unit and wipe it up.
- If the drain is clear and F20 stays, the pan sensing is next.
- We flush the drain path and check that water leaves freely.
- Once the drain flows freely, we confirm the pan sensing before closing the job, with a 30-day workmanship warranty.

Can I silence the F20 alarm?
Yes, any button stops the sound. The port is still clogged, though, so clean it soon according to the owner's manual, or water may overflow the pan and run onto the floor.
Where does the water come from?
It is condensation pulled out of the air by the heat pump, much like an air conditioner. A normal amount is expected, and it needs a clear path to leave the unit through the drain.
Is F20 a leak from the tank?
No. It describes the condensate port, not the tank. If water keeps appearing after the drain is clear, tell us so we can trace its source with the unit and the plumbing in view.
Still seeing F20?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
