What FG means

On the first-generation GE GeoSpring GEH50DEED hybrid water heater, built around 2009 to 2012, FG corresponds to a T5 ambient temperature check. T5 is the sensor that reads the temperature of the air around the unit. On some models this appears as part of a service test sequence rather than as a failure. If you see FG without having started anything, it may mean the control is running or has left that check on the display.

Common causes of FG

  • Whether the unit entered a test sequence by itself
  • T5 sensor wiring and connector
  • Sensor reading against actual room temperature
  • Control logic that shows test steps
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Note exactly what the display shows around FG. 2. Check that nobody pressed buttons together on the panel. 3. Wait a little to see whether the display returns to normal. 4. Tell us if hot water is affected. Keep the air filter clean in the meantime.

! Why to stop there
  • FG may be only a test step, but we cannot tell that from the display.
  • We check the T5 reading against the room's actual air temperature.
  • If it proves to be a test step, we explain how it ended up on your display and leave the unit alone.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
FGFG questions
Is FG an error?

On some models it is a step in a service test, not a failure. If your unit shows it without anyone starting a test, we look at why the control is displaying it.

What is T5?

T5 is the ambient sensor that measures the air around the water heater. The control uses it to decide how the heat pump should run in your room.

Do I need to do anything?

If hot water is normal, you can wait and watch the display. If FG stays up or the water runs cold, book a visit and mention exactly what the display shows.
