What F11 means
On the first-generation GE GeoSpring hybrid water heater, the GEH50DEED sold about 2009 to 2012, F11 is the dry tank warning. The control believes the tank has not been filled, and powering the heating elements without water can damage them. You will see F11 on the display, typically when the heater was switched on before it was filled or after the tank was drained for work. The tank has to be completely full before the unit is powered up.
Common causes of F11
- Whether the tank is completely full
- Cold water supply and shutoff position
- The dry-tank sensing circuit
- Whether power was applied before filling
1. Turn the heater off at the breaker. 2. Fill the tank completely; run a hot faucet until water flows steadily. 3. Restore power only after the tank is full. 4. If F11 persists with a full tank, call us.
- A full tank with F11 still showing implicates the sensing circuit or the control.
- We confirm the fill, then test the sensing path.
- If the tank is full and the code stays, the sensing is tested before any part is quoted.

Why must the tank be full before power?
The elements are designed to sit in water. Without it they overheat and can burn out within moments, which is why this generation alarms when it thinks the tank is empty.
I filled it and F11 stays. What now?
Make sure air has been purged by a hot faucet running steadily. If F11 remains with a full tank, the sensing circuit needs testing, which we do on a visit.
Did I damage the heater?
Possibly not, if the unit was off the whole time. If it ran dry for a while, we check the elements as part of the visit and tell you what we find.
Still seeing F11?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
