What 5 means

GE Zoneline AZ95 single-package vertical units, the current AZ95E and AZ95H line, show code 5 when an outside thermistor is not reading valid temperatures. The control needs the outdoor sensors to run the heat pump and cooling cycles properly. With the error active, the unit stops cooling and heat pump operation and gives only resistance heat and fan. Code 5 is a different problem on AZ90 and AZ91 Zoneline units.

Common causes of 5

  • Outdoor thermistor open, shorted or out of range
  • Sensor wiring or connector exposed to weather
  • Control misreading a working sensor
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Hold MODE and press AUX to see stored errors; -- means none. 2. If you want the list gone, press AUX; every other key leaves it as it was. 3. Choose heat or fan mode to confirm basic operation. 4. Look at the exterior grille from outside for ice, debris or damage if you can do so safely. 5. Leave the unit closed and report code 5 if it returns.

! Why to stop there
  • Weather exposure can affect a sensor or its connection on the outside of the unit.
  • We check the sensor value against outdoor conditions and inspect the wiring.
  • We state the price in writing before starting, with a 30-day workmanship warranty on the work.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
55 questions
How is code 5 different from code 4?

Code 4 is an indoor thermistor and code 5 an outdoor one. Both stop cooling and heat pump operation and leave resistance heat and fan available.

Can weather trigger code 5?

Moisture, ice or debris at the outside grille can upset a sensor or its connection. If the code appears after a storm, mention that when you report it.

Why does the older AZ90 code 5 look different?

On AZ90 and AZ91 units it points to the outdoor coil sensor and the unit keeps running on a default value. The AZ95 version removes cooling.
