What Cool light flashing means

On GE window air conditioners with electronic controls and a Cool LED, such as the AHY08LZ, AHP08LZ, PHC08LY and AHTR10AC, a flashing Cool light means the evaporator coils are frosting up or running too cold. The evaporator temperature is too low, and the compressor may cycle off briefly to let it recover. This usually happens when the unit runs while the outside temperature is below about 70°F, so the air passing over the coils is already cool.

Common causes of Cool light flashing

  • Running the unit when it is cooler than about 70°F outside
  • Frost forming on the evaporator coils
  • Evaporator temperature too low, with the compressor cycling off
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Turn the unit off when it is below 70°F outside. 2. Let any frost on the coils melt before restarting. 3. If it is warm outside and the light keeps flashing without the compressor cycling off, call for service. 4. Check that the air filter is clean.

! Why to stop there
  • If the light flashes on warm days, we check the coil temperature sensing, the airflow and the fan.
  • We confirm the filter is clean and the compressor is cycling as it should.
  • Written price first, with a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
Cool light flashingCool light flashing questions
Why is the Cool light flashing on my window AC?

The evaporator coils are frosting or running too cold, often because the unit is operating in cool outdoor air under about 70°F. The compressor may cycle off briefly to recover.

What should I do when it flashes?

Turn the unit off when it is below 70°F outside and let it thaw. A clean air filter also helps airflow across the coils and reduces the chance of frost.

When should I call?

If it is warm outside and the light keeps flashing without the compressor cycling off, the unit needs a proper check, and we can test the cooling cycle on site.
