What E1 means

On GE dehumidifiers with a digital display from roughly 2008 to 2010, such as the AHM30, AHW30, AHH40, AHM40 and AHM65 series, E1 means the unit has detected a problem with its humidity sensor. The control cannot read the moisture level in the room, so it cannot decide when to start or stop drawing water out of the air. You will see E1 on the display, and the unit may stop running or behave erratically until the reading returns.

Common causes of E1

  • Humidity sensor circuit not returning a valid reading
  • Temporary electronic glitch that clears after a power cycle
  • Sensor wiring or connection to the control board
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Unplug the dehumidifier from the wall outlet. 2. Leave it unplugged for a short time, then plug it back in. 3. Turn it on and watch the display to see whether E1 returns. 4. Make sure the air inlet is not blocked and the room is not unusually dusty. 5. If E1 comes back, stop using the unit and note the model number from the rating label.

! Why to stop there
  • Whether the sensor itself or the board that reads it is the cause stays unclear until we test the circuit.
  • We check the sensor reading against actual room humidity and inspect the connections.
  • You get a written price before any repair begins, and our work carries a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
E1E1 questions
Is E1 the same on newer GE dehumidifiers?

No. This E1 belongs to the digital-display units of about 2008 to 2010. Later GE dehumidifiers do not list E-codes, so the same characters on a newer unit would need a closer look.

Can I keep running the unit with E1 showing?

We suggest unplugging it. Without a valid humidity reading the unit cannot control itself properly, and running it may waste power or leave the room damp.

Will unplugging fix E1?

Sometimes a power cycle clears a one-time glitch, and that is the first step to try. If E1 returns right away, the sensor circuit needs testing.
