What F2 / F20 means
On GE, Profile and Café ranges and wall ovens with electronic oven controls, F2 or F20 means the oven temperature climbed above a preset limit for a reason the control could not identify. The control cuts the heat to protect the oven and displays the code. You may notice the oven shuts itself off mid-cycle or will not start again until the cavity has cooled. Because it is a heat-limit protection, treat the code seriously and do not keep restarting the oven.
Common causes of F2 / F20
- Temperature sensor reading higher than the real oven temperature
- Relay that keeps sending power to a bake or broil element
- Control board that is not turning the heat off on time
- Self-clean or door lock circuit leaving the oven hot
1. Switch the oven off and let it cool completely. 2. Switch the circuit breaker or fuse off for a minute or two. 3. Restore the power. 4. Start a normal low-temperature setting only if the code is gone. 5. If the code persists, service is the next step.
- An overheating oven can be a control problem or a sensor problem, and the two need different repairs.
- We check the sensor and the heating circuit together before deciding which part is involved.
- Repeated restarts on a code like this can stress the cabinet and the wiring.

Is F2 or F20 dangerous?
The oven shuts down heat on its own, which is its way of protecting itself. Still, we suggest not using it until it has been checked. Let it cool and use the breaker reset once; if it returns, call us.
Why did my oven show F2 in the middle of baking?
The control saw a temperature above its limit and stopped. The reason is not always visible. We look at the sensor reading against the real temperature and at the relays that feed the elements.
Can I keep cooking on the stovetop?
On a range, the cooktop is separate from the oven, so it may still work. Please do not use the oven again until it has been inspected. We give a written price before any repair.
Still seeing F2 / F20?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
