What FD means

On GE, Profile and Café ranges and wall ovens with electronic oven controls, FD points to the temperature probe or the receptacle it plugs into. The probe is the meat thermometer lead that connects inside the oven. When the control reads an unusual signal from that jack it shows FD, and the oven may stop a probe-based cook or refuse to continue baking until the code is cleared.

Common causes of FD

  • Probe jack inside the oven reading an incorrect signal
  • Probe itself with a damaged lead
  • Connection between the receptacle and the control
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Remove the meat probe from the oven and the receptacle. 2. Let the oven cool. 3. Switch the circuit breaker or fuse off for a minute or two, then restore power. 4. Try a normal bake without the probe. 5. If the code persists, book a visit for the oven.

! Why to stop there
  • The probe and the jack both wear, so we test them separately.
  • A reading that is only wrong when hot needs a test with the oven at temperature.
  • Replacing the probe will not fix a bad receptacle, so we confirm which one first.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
FDFD questions
Do I have to use the meat probe at all?

No. If you do not cook with it, take the probe out of the oven and leave the jack empty. If FD still appears with no probe plugged in, the receptacle or the control may be involved and the oven needs a look from us.

My probe lead looks worn. Is that the cause?

It might be. A damaged lead can send a wrong signal, but a worn jack inside the oven can do exactly the same. We test both separately before replacing anything, so you are not paying for the wrong part.

Will switching the breaker off help clear FD?

It is worth one try. Removing power for a minute or two lets the control restart and re-read the jack. If FD comes straight back after you restore power, the part involved has to be tested by us.
