What F-C means
F-C on the first-generation GE GeoSpring GEH50DEED hybrid water heater, built around 2009 to 2012, means the evaporator is not frost free. Frost or ice on the evaporator blocks airflow and cuts the heat the unit can gather from the room. The control spots this from its temperature readings and shows F-C. A cold room, a blocked filter or a weak airflow path can lead to it. Later GEH50DFEJ models use plain F-numbers, and F-C does not mean the same there.
Common causes of F-C
- Dust on the air filter and evaporator face
- Room temperature and airflow around the unit
- Fan speed and the sensors reading the evaporator
- Defrost behavior of the control
1. Clean the air filter. 2. Clear anything blocking the air inlet and outlet. 3. Check that the room is not unusually cold. 4. Do not chip ice or open the cabinet; call us so a technician can inspect it.
- A frosted evaporator can come from poor airflow or from a low refrigerant condition, and only inspection decides.
- We check airflow first, then readings during a run.
- We look at the coil after the unit has sat idle, so frost is read in its true state.

Is a cold garage the problem?
It can contribute, since the heat pump has less heat to gather. We check the filter and airflow first, because those are easy to correct, and then the readings during a run.
Should I defrost it myself?
No. Do not open the cabinet or use tools on the coil. Chipping at ice can damage the evaporator, and we can inspect it safely and explain what we find.
Will F-C damage the unit?
Running with a frosted evaporator makes the heat pump less effective and wastes energy. It is better to book service than to leave it for weeks while bills rise.
