GE GeoSpring GEH50/GEH80 Code F-C: Evaporator Not Frost Free

What F-C means
On the older GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters, models GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ from roughly 2014 to 2016, F-C means the evaporator is not frost free, with a probable refrigerant leak. The heat pump coil should stay free of ice, and when frost builds up the heat pump loses output. The same F letters mean different things on the newer 2025 PF and PH models, so the two are kept separate.
Common causes of F-C
- Low refrigerant from a probable leak
- Evaporator airflow restriction
- Defrost operation
- Evaporator temperature sensing
1. Write down the code and the full model number from the label, for example one like GEH50DFEJSR. 2. Clear anything blocking the air inlet and outlet. 3. Do not chip ice or open the housing. 4. Call us and we will check the heat pump and look for the cause.
- Frost can come from airflow or low refrigerant, and we need to separate them.
- A leak search is part of the visit if frost returns.
- Sealed-system work is quoted in writing first.

Is F-C the same as F-L?
No. F-C is an evaporator that is not frost free, with a probable leak. F-L is an evaporator that is not defrosting. We check both conditions on these models.
Does this model still make hot water?
Generally yes, using the electric elements. Running cost rises while the heat pump is limited, and recovery after heavy use is slower than normal until we have repaired the coil problem.
Is a 2014 to 2016 unit worth repairing?
It depends on the repair and the condition of the tank. We give you a written price and an honest view before you decide, so the choice stays yours.
Still seeing F-C?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
