What F-G means

On the older GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters, GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ from about 2014 to 2016, F-G is a T5 ambient temperature check. It points to the room air around the unit being a problem for the heat pump, rather than a part that has failed. Owners often notice it in a very cold or very hot space, with the heater leaning on its electric elements. The code is technician service data.

Common causes of F-G

  • Room air outside the heat pump's working range
  • Poor air circulation
  • T5 ambient sensor reading
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Notice how cold or hot the space is, and whether it changed. 2. Keep the air inlet and outlet clear and move stored items away from the unit. 3. If the heater is in a closet, open the door for airflow. 4. Call us if the room is normal and F-G stays.

! Why to stop there
  • A harsh room and a bad sensor give the same code, so we compare readings.
  • We tell you if the location is the issue.
  • A written price comes before any repair.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F-GF-G questions
Does F-G mean something is broken?

Not necessarily. It is a check on the ambient temperature, so the heater may simply be responding to its surroundings. We check the room and the sensor to be sure.

Is it the same as F48 on newer models?

The idea is similar, but F-G belongs to the 2014 to 2016 GEH50 and GEH80 series, and F48 belongs to the 2025 PF and PH series.

Will hot water continue?

Yes, the electric elements can heat the tank. It costs more than heat pump operation, and recovery after heavy use may be slower than you are used to.
