What F10, F20 means

On the 2025-and-newer GE Profile GeoSpring heat pump water heaters in the PF and PH series, F10 and F20 both point to the lower heating element circuit. The control has decided that the lower element is not behaving the way it should, so it reports a lower heating element failure. You will usually see the code on the display along with water that heats slowly, runs out sooner than before, or relies on the heat pump alone. The unit may keep making some hot water from the upper element.

Common causes of F10, F20

  • The lower element circuit and its wiring connections
  • The lower element itself
  • The thermostat or limit device in the lower element path
  • Control board output to the lower element
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Write down the code and the model number from the rating label, for example one starting with PF or PH. 2. Check that the water heater breaker has not tripped and is fully on. 3. Do not open any panels or touch the element wiring. 4. Use hot water sparingly and call us so the lower element can be replaced.

! Why to stop there
  • A tripped breaker can look like a bad element, so we confirm the supply first.
  • We test the element and its circuit before ordering anything, since the code alone does not prove which part is open.
  • If the element is the cause, we replace it and write down the price before starting.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F10, F20F10, F20 questions
Is F20 different from F10?

Both codes are listed together for the lower heating element on this platform. We treat them as the same circuit check and confirm which element is involved when we test the unit.

Will I still have hot water?

Often some, because the upper element and the heat pump can keep working. Recovery is slower and the tank may run out sooner, so it is best to have the lower element looked at promptly.

Can I replace the element myself?

We advise against it. The element sits behind covers in a tank full of water on a high-amperage circuit. We handle it, and the repair carries our 30-day workmanship warranty.
