What F13 means

F13 on 2014-2016 GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters in the GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ series means the control senses that a key on the control panel is stuck down. The control reads a button press that never ends, so it reports a stuck key instead of accepting normal input. You will see F13 on the display, and changing modes or temperature from the panel may not respond. Hot water itself is often unaffected.

Common causes of F13

  • Whether a button is physically held down or swollen
  • Moisture, grime or damage on the touch panel
  • The ribbon or connector between panel and control
  • The control's key input
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Look at the panel and make sure nothing is leaning on a button. 2. Wipe the panel with a barely damp cloth and dry it. 3. Press each key once, firmly and briefly. 4. Keep the unit's covers closed and do not pry the panel off.

! Why to stop there
  • The key may be stuck mechanically, wet, or reading falsely from a connection problem.
  • We test the panel's response before replacing anything.
  • Cleaning and reseating come before any replacement of the panel, and the price is written down first.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F13F13 questions
Will I lose hot water with F13?

In most cases the heating continues using the last settings. You just cannot adjust them reliably from the panel, so tell us if the temperature seems off.

Could water on the panel cause F13?

Yes, moisture can make a panel read as pressed. Dry it gently and check whether the code clears. If it returns, we examine the panel and its connection.

Is this a safety problem?

It is an input problem, not a heating or leak warning. Still, we recommend having it looked at, since unreliable panel input can hide other messages.
