What F5, F6, F7, F8 means

Codes F5, F6, F7 and F8 on the 2014-2016 GE GeoSpring hybrid electric water heaters in the GEH50DEEJ, GEH50DFEJ, GEH80DEEJ and GEH80DFEJ series each point to one refrigeration temperature sensor. F5 is the T3a sensor at the evaporator inlet, F6 is T3b at the evaporator outlet, F7 is T4 at the compressor outlet, and F8 is T5, the ambient air sensor. The control uses these readings to run the heat pump, so a missing or out-of-range reading shows up as the matching code on the display.

Common causes of F5, F6, F7, F8

  • Which of the four sensors the displayed number names
  • Sensor connector and the wire run back to the control
  • Whether the sensor reading is sensible for the room and tank
  • The control's sensor input
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Note which number is on the display, because each one names a different sensor. 2. Check that the air inlet and outlet around the unit are open. 3. Clean the air filter as shown in the owner's manual. 4. Do not open the cabinet; the sensors sit beside the sealed refrigerant circuit.

! Why to stop there
  • The code names a sensor circuit, which may mean the sensor, its wiring or the control input.
  • We compare the sensor's reading with the actual temperature at that spot.
  • Only after the right sensor is proven bad do we price a replacement, in writing.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
F5, F6, F7, F8F5, F6, F7, F8 questions
Why does one code cover four sensors?

They are all refrigeration temperature sensors, and the display number tells them apart: F5 evaporator inlet, F6 evaporator outlet, F7 compressor outlet, F8 ambient. We start with the one your display names.

Will the water heater still heat with a sensor code?

The electric elements work independently of these sensors, so hot water often continues, though recovery is slower. We cannot promise this for every unit, so tell us what you see.

Is F8 caused by a cold garage?

F8 reports an ambient sensor reading problem, not simply cold air. A cold room can limit heat pump work, but it does not by itself produce this code. We check the sensor circuit.
