GE Front-Load Washer Door Will Not Open After the Cycle
A door that stays locked after the cycle can be normal for a short time. Here is how to tell a normal delay from a lock that needs attention, and what not to force.
A GE front-load washer locks its door during the cycle and releases it afterward. If it stays shut when the cycle ends, the cause may be as simple as a few more minutes of waiting, or as involved as a lock that never received the release signal.
Wait Before You Pull
Some cycles end with a final spin, and the lock needs a short time to release. Give it a few minutes and try again. Pulling hard on the handle can break the latch, which turns a small problem into a larger one.
Reasons the Door Stays Locked
- Water still in the drum: the washer will not unlock with water inside. If you can see water at the glass, the issue is draining.
- Power interruption: a brief outage mid-cycle can leave the lock engaged. Unplug the washer for about a minute, plug it back in and try again.
- Paused cycle: if a cycle stopped partway, press start or cancel and let it finish or drain.
- Latch or lock that has not reset: this looks the same as the items above, so the earlier steps are worth trying first.
Getting Your Clothes Out
If the drum is free of water and nothing resets the lock, your owner manual may describe a manual release for your model. Use it only after the washer is unplugged and fully drained, and only where the manual describes it. Many models have no user-accessible release.
Limits of a Door Check
A door that will not open and a door that will not stay shut can look similar but have different causes. A lock that fails to release is not the same as a drain problem or a control that has stopped sending the release command.
