What 25 means
On GE Zoneline AZ95 heat pump models (AZ95E and AZ95H, the current line), code 25 means abnormal defrost. Five defrost cycles in a row failed to warm the outdoor coil above 68°F, so the control locks out the heat pump and defrost. The lockout clears itself after 4.5 days. During that time the room relies on resistance heat. Older AZ90 and AZ91 units do not share this code.
Common causes of 25
- Defrost cycles not warming the outdoor coil
- Ice or debris on the outdoor coil or grille
- Outdoor sensor or reversing circuit problem
1. Hold MODE, then press AUX, to read the stored entries; -- means none. 2. AUX cancels the stored entries while every other key keeps them. 3. Use heat mode and expect resistance heating while the lockout lasts. 4. Check from outside, if you can do so safely, whether the exterior grille is iced over or blocked. 5. Report a repeat to your property manager.
- Repeated failed defrosts may come from weather, airflow, a sensor or the sealed system.
- We check the outdoor conditions and test the defrost operation.
- We state the price in writing before work and give a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Other Room Air Conditioner codes
Will it clear on its own?
Yes, the lockout expires after about four and a half days. If the conditions that caused it remain, it can return. Weather and outdoor airflow influence how often it appears.
Is the room still heated?
Resistance heat is available, so the room can be warmed, but it uses more electricity than the heat pump. Expect somewhat higher electricity use during that time.
Does this apply to cooling-only models?
No. Code 25 refers to heat pump models. A cooling-only AZ95E has no heat pump defrost. Check your model label for E or H in the name.
Still seeing 25?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
