What 16 means

On GE Zoneline single-package vertical units of the AZ90/AZ91 generation, code 16 means the outdoor temperature is beyond the range the unit is built to run in: below 0°F or above 130°F. The control holds back normal operation until the air returns to range, and the code then clears itself. The display shows 16 with the history count beside it. This points to the weather, not to a damaged part.

Common causes of 16

  • Outdoor air genuinely below 0°F or above 130°F
  • Outdoor air sensor reading wrong in normal weather
  • Hot exhaust air recirculating around the outdoor grille
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Press ENTER to see the stored codes and SCROLL to step through them. 2. Check the outdoor temperature against the 0°F and 130°F limits. 3. Keep the outdoor grille clear so hot exhaust air is not circulating back into it. 4. If the weather is mild and 16 still shows, note the time of day and call us.

! Why to stop there
  • Whether the sensor is reporting the true outdoor temperature stays unknown while the weather is in range
  • We compare the unit's reading with a known air temperature and tell you plainly if the unit is fine
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
1616 questions
Will code 16 go away by itself on my AZ90?

Yes. Once the outdoor temperature is back between 0°F and 130°F the unit resumes normal operation and the condition clears without any reset. You do not need to press anything.

Does 16 mean my Zoneline is broken?

No. It means the outdoor air is outside the limits the unit is designed for. If it appears on a mild day, that points to a sensor reading that we should check against real air temperature.

Should I clear the history after code 16?

It is not necessary. Holding ENTER and SCROLL for 3 to 6 seconds wipes the list, but the code only comes back if the temperature drifts out of range again, so clearing changes nothing about the unit.
