What FL means
On GE portable air conditioners in the APCD, APWD, APSD, APXD, APLS and APLH series, FL means the internal water tank is full. The air conditioner turns itself off automatically and the Water Full indicator lights, so the display reads FL and cooling stops. It is not a failure: the unit collected moisture from the room air and needs draining before it runs again. An example is the APCD08JALW.
Common causes of FL
- Water tank full after a humid day
- Drain hose or plug left closed
- Unit tilted or on an uneven floor
- Float switch reading full when it is not
1. Switch the unit off and unplug it. 2. Empty the water tank following the draining instructions in the Air Conditioner Care section of your owner's manual. 3. Make sure the unit stands upright on a level floor. 4. Plug it back in and restart.
- Whether a full tank is the only reason for FL stays unknown if it returns right after draining
- We check the float switch and the drain path, and if the unit was simply full, nothing needs repair

Why did my portable AC shut off with FL?
FL means the internal tank is full, and the unit stops on its own to avoid overflow. Drain the tank following the instructions in your owner's manual and it can run again.
How often will FL show on this unit?
It depends on how humid the room is. In humid weather the tank fills faster, so you may need to drain it more often, sometimes more than once in a day.
Is FL a sign of a leak?
No, FL means the tank is full. A leak is a different matter: if you find water on the floor while the tank is not full, call us and keep the unit unplugged until it is checked.
