What 88 means
On GE window and built-in air conditioners with an LED display, such as the AHY08LZ, AJCQ10ACH and AHP08LZ, 88 appears when the cord is connected or power returns after an outage. All lights come on, 88 shows for 2 seconds with one beep, and then the unit resumes its previous mode. It is a display test and a normal power-up step. Two beeps instead of one mean a button press failed.
Common causes of 88
- Normal display test after power is restored
- Cord plugged in or breaker switched back on
- Two beeps from a button press that did not register
1. No action is needed; the unit resumes its previous mode by itself after the display test. 2. If you hear two beeps, press the button again. 3. Check that the unit starts cooling afterward. 4. Make sure the plug is fully seated and the cord is undamaged if 88 repeats often.
- If 88 keeps appearing without a power loss, we check the power supply and plug for intermittent contact.
- We also check the control.

Why does my air conditioner show 88?
It is a normal display test whenever the cord is plugged in or power comes back. The lights flash on together with a single beep, and the unit then goes back to what it was doing.
What do two beeps mean?
Two beeps signal a button press that failed. Press the button again. One beep with 88 at power-up is the normal start-up beep and needs no action from you.
Should I worry if it happens often?
Only if there was no power interruption. Repeating resets can point to a loose plug or a supply issue, which we can check during a visit and tell you about before any work.
Still unsure about 88?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
