What P1 means

On GE digital-display dehumidifiers from about 2008 to 2010, such as the AHM30, AHH40 and AHM65 series, P1 does not mean something is broken. It tells you the unit is in its defrost cycle, which melts frost that has built up on the cooling coil in a cool room. While P1 shows, the unit pauses water removal. The code goes away on its own once defrosting finishes. Note that P1 means other things on GE pump-equipped models.

Common causes of P1

  • Frost on the cooling coil in a cool or low-humidity room
  • Normal automatic defrost still in progress
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Leave the dehumidifier plugged in and let it finish defrosting by itself. 2. Do not turn it off or unplug it while P1 shows. 3. Check that the air inlet and outlet are clear so the coil can warm up. 4. Make sure the room is not colder than the unit is designed for. 5. After the code clears, watch whether the unit returns to normal operation.

! Why to stop there
  • If P1 keeps returning or never clears, we need to know whether the room is simply too cold or something is wrong with the sensing.
  • We check the coil, fan and temperature readings together.
  • Any repair is priced in writing first and carries a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
P1P1 questions
How long does P1 last?

It lasts until the unit finishes defrosting, which depends on how much frost formed. Give it time and let it clear by itself rather than interrupting it.

Is P1 the same on my pump model?

No. On some GE pump models P1 refers to a drain-pump or water-level problem. This page covers the defrost meaning found on the 2008 to 2010 digital-display units.

Why does my unit frost up?

Dehumidifiers work best in warmer rooms. In a cool basement the coil can drop below freezing, so the unit pauses to melt the ice, and that is when P1 appears.
