What P1 means
On the GE 50-pint dehumidifier with a built-in drain pump and Smart Dry, such as the APHR50LB, P1 points to the water level sensor. The unit sees the bucket filling even though the pump should be draining it. Very humid conditions can cause this, as can a problem with the float sensor. The display shows P1, and the unit may stop until the water level reading makes sense again.
Common causes of P1
- Very humid room filling the bucket faster than the pump moves water
- Float sensor not reading the water level correctly
- Drain hose kinked, blocked or routed so the pump cannot push water out
1. Turn the unit off and unplug it for a few seconds. 2. Plug it back in and turn it on to reset the sensor. 3. Check that the drain hose is not kinked or pinched and that its end is free to drain. 4. Empty the bucket if it is full and seat it again. 5. If P1 continues, refer to the warranty information that came with the unit.
- Whether the float, the pump or the hose is the cause stays open after the reset.
- We watch the pump run, check the float movement and test the drain path.
- We provide a written price first, and repairs carry our 30-day workmanship warranty.
Other Dehumidifier codes
Is this the same P1 as on older GE dehumidifiers?
No. Older digital-display units use P1 for a defrost cycle. On this pump model P1 is about the water level sensor. Check the model number on the rating label if you are unsure which generation you own.
Can high humidity alone cause P1?
Yes. If the room is very humid, the bucket can fill while the pump is still working. Try the reset and see whether P1 returns once the room dries out.
Should I keep using the unit with P1?
Not until the water level is sorted out. If the pump is not clearing the water, the bucket could overfill, so empty it and avoid leaving the unit unattended.
Still seeing P1?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
