What Clean the Filter means

On GE dehumidifiers from about 2012 onward, including the ADEL50, APEL70, APER50, APHR50 and ADHR35 series, the Clean the Filter light is not an error code. It comes on after 250 hours of operation to remind you to wash the air filter. A clogged filter cuts airflow, which makes the unit work harder and collect less water. The light stays on until you clean the filter and reset it.

Common causes of Clean the Filter

  • 250 hours of running time reached
  • Dust and lint building up on the air filter
  • Reset button not pressed after cleaning
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Unplug the dehumidifier. 2. Remove the filter from the unit. 3. Wash it with warm soapy water, rinse it and let it dry completely. 4. Put the filter back in place. 5. Press the Filter button to reset the light, or hold it for 3 seconds on newer models.

! Why to stop there
  • If the light stays on after a clean filter and reset, the reset may not be registering.
  • We check the filter button and how the control counts hours.
  • Any repair is quoted in writing first and covered by a 30-day workmanship warranty.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
Clean the FilterClean the Filter questions
Is the filter light a sign of a breakdown?

No. It is a timed reminder. It simply tells you 250 hours have passed and the filter is due for cleaning. It is simply a maintenance prompt, so a unit showing it can otherwise run normally.

How do I reset the light?

After cleaning and refitting the filter, press the Filter button. On newer models you hold it for 3 seconds. The light should go out. A light that stays lit afterward means the reset was not registered.

Why does a dirty filter matter?

Dust restricts airflow over the coil, so the unit collects less water, runs longer and can even frost up. Regular cleaning keeps it efficient. Cleaning every few weeks in a dusty space is a good habit.
