GE Dishwasher Will Not Start: Door Latch, Lock and Delay Checks

A dishwasher that does nothing when you press start can feel dead, but the most common reasons are settings and the door, not the motor. Work through the checks below in order, because each one is quick and none needs tools.

Door First

The machine will not run unless it senses the door as closed. Push the door firmly until you hear the latch click. A rack sticking out, a dish handle against the door seal or a full detergent door that has not closed can all keep the latch from engaging.

Check Controls and Settings

• Control lock: many GE panels have a lock option that ignores button presses. Your manual shows how to turn it off for your model.
• Delay start: if a delay was set, the dishwasher waits and looks idle. Cancel it and start again.
• Cycle selection: select a cycle before pressing start, since some panels need both.
• Reset: switch the breaker off for a minute, then on again. This clears a stuck control state.

Does It Hum or Stay Silent?

A low hum with no water movement points one way. Complete silence points another, toward power, latch or control. Tell us which you hear, since it narrows the search.

Power and Water

Make sure the kitchen outlet circuit is on and that the water supply valve under the sink is open. If you run a disposer on the same sink, test that it works, since a tripped outlet sometimes affects both.

What These Checks Cannot Settle

If the door shuts firmly, the settings are clear and the breaker reset changed nothing, the latch switch or control board may be involved. Those cannot be judged from the outside.
