What C3 means
On GE electronic-control dishwashers with C-codes, such as the PDT855SSJSS, C3 tells you the dishwasher will not drain. The control tried to empty the tub and the water stayed. You will find water standing in the bottom, a cycle that stopped, and a code on the display. A blocked path or a pump that is not moving water can both look like this. The code reports the result, not the reason, so the cause has to be found by working along the drain path.
Common causes of C3
- Drain hose or air gap blocked
- Disposer inlet still plugged
- Filter and sump packed with debris
- Drain pump or its control not running
- Check valve or hose restriction
1. Switch the breaker to the dishwasher off for about 30 seconds, then switch it back on. 2. Clear the filter and look for debris in the tub. 3. Clean the air gap and straighten the drain hose. 4. Run the disposer. 5. Start a cycle again. If C3 stays, leave the water in and book a visit.
- A breaker reset does not remove a blockage, and it cannot revive a pump that has stopped.
- We test the drain path first and the pump next, so you pay only for what is needed.
- The price is in writing before any repair.
Other Dishwasher codes
Why does my GE dishwasher show C3?
It reports that the dishwasher will not drain. Water stays in the tub because of a blockage or because the pump is not moving it.
Should I bail out the water?
You can scoop standing water out with a cup or towel to reach the filter. Keep the dishwasher off until the cause is found, so it does not try to run again.
Can a breaker reset clear C3?
A reset can clear a stuck control after a power event. If water is still sitting in the tub, the drain path or pump still needs attention.
Still seeing C3?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
