What FTD / F56 means

On GE electronic-control dishwashers that show C-codes, such as the GDT530PSDSS, FTD and F56 are two spellings of the same message: failure to drain. The control tried to empty the tub and the water did not leave, so it stopped the cycle. F56 is the only F-number in this family. You will see standing water at the bottom of the tub, a code on the display and dishes that were left half washed. The problem sits somewhere on the way from the tub to the sink drain.

Common causes of FTD / F56

  • Drain hose kinked or crushed behind the unit
  • Air gap or disposer inlet blocked
  • Filter and sump holding food debris
  • Drain pump not moving water
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Check the drain hose for kinks and make sure it is not crushed. 2. Clean the air gap at the sink. 3. Run the garbage disposer so its inlet is open. 4. Clear the filter at the bottom of the tub. 5. Start a short cycle and watch the tub. If water remains, stop using the dishwasher.

! Why to stop there
  • Clear hose and air gap leave the pump itself untested.
  • We time the drain and check pump movement before touching the pump.
  • You get a written price before we start.
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
FTD / F56FTD / F56 questions
What do FTD and F56 mean on a GE dishwasher?

Both say the dishwasher failed to drain. They are the same message under two spellings, so the same drain-path checks apply whichever one your panel shows.

What should I check first for a drain failure?

Look at the drain hose for kinks, clean the air gap, and run the disposer. These are the common restrictions and you can check them without opening anything.

Is it safe to leave water in the tub?

For a short time, yes, but dirty water can smell and attract pests. Do not keep starting cycles on a full tub, and book a visit if the checks do not help.
