What Cup Open means
On GE electronic dishwashers that display C-codes, such as the PDT855SSJSS, the message Cup Open tells you the detergent cup is not closed. The control checks the cup before it starts, and if the lid is up it will not begin the wash. You see the message on the panel and the cycle does not start. It usually happens when the cup was left open after loading or the detergent was added and the lid was not pressed shut.
Common causes of Cup Open
- Detergent cup lid left open
- Lid not latched after adding detergent
- Dish or residue keeping the lid from closing
1. Add detergent to the cup. 2. Press the lid down until it latches. 3. Close the door. 4. Press Start. If you want to run the cycle without opening the door, pressing Start again overrides the message. 5. Make sure nothing is blocking the cup.
- If the lid is latched and the message stays, the cup switch may be failing.
- We check the switch and the latch before replacing anything.
- The price is in writing first.

What does Cup Open mean on a GE dishwasher?
It means the detergent cup is not closed. The control will not start the wash until the cup lid is latched or you override the message by pressing Start a second time.
How do I override Cup Open?
After adding detergent and latching the lid, press Start again. That overrides the message without opening the door, so you can start the wash without waiting or reloading anything.
Why does it say Cup Open when the lid is shut?
A dish or detergent residue can stop the latch from seating. If the lid is clearly closed and the message stays, the cup switch needs testing, which we do before replacing any part.
