What P1 means
On GE 50-pint dehumidifiers that include a built-in pump, P1 appears when Pump Out Mode is on but the water is not being pumped out. The pump is meant to push condensate through a drain hose, and when it cannot, the control halts dehumidifying and shows P1. You will see the display stuck on P1, little or no moisture removal, and sometimes a bucket that has water in it. The same condition on the larger 70-pint model shows as E01. On GE dehumidifiers from 2008 to 2010, P1 means something different: the unit is running a defrost cycle, so check which model you have before acting on it.
Common causes of P1
- Drain hose pinched, kinked or blocked
- Bucket not seated fully
- Pump unable to move water through the outlet
- Hose end sitting too high for the pump to lift the water
1. Unplug the unit for 30 seconds. 2. Check that the pump hose is straight and free of kinks. 3. Remove the bucket and seat it firmly. 4. Plug the unit in and restart the cycle. 5. If P1 shows again, turn Pump Out Mode off and use the bucket instead.
- Seating the bucket and straightening the hose fix the easy causes only.
- A pump that hums but moves no water, or stays silent, needs a test we do on site.
- We explain whether repair is sensible for the unit before we quote.
Other Dehumidifier codes
What does P1 mean on my GE dehumidifier?
Pump Out Mode is on, but water is not leaving through the hose. The control stops dehumidifying until the pump path works or you switch to bucket draining.
How long should I unplug it for P1?
About 30 seconds is enough for a control reset. If P1 returns after the bucket and hose have been checked, the pump or its sensing needs to be tested.
Can I use the dehumidifier while P1 is showing?
Turn Pump Out Mode off and rely on the bucket. The unit can then dry the room normally, but you must empty it by hand when it fills.
Still seeing P1?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
