What L / U means
On GE upright frost-free freezers with the older electronic control (FUF12, FUF14 and FUF17 era, with Colder and Warmer pads), L and U are status readings, not problems. The display reads L when the controls are locked, which you do by holding Alarm Reset for 3 seconds. It reads U and then the current temperature when the controls are unlocked.
Common causes of L / U
- Controls locked on purpose or by an accidental press
- Alarm Reset held down while cleaning or reaching in
1. Press and hold Alarm Reset for 3 seconds. 2. The display shows U and then the current temperature when unlocked. 3. Do the same to lock the controls again. 4. Then try the Colder and Warmer pads. Close the door afterward.
- If the pads do not respond after unlocking, the keypad or control needs testing.
- We check the pad response before suggesting any part.
- Rarely a repair, but if it is, the price is on paper before we start.
Other Freezer codes
Why does my freezer show L?
The controls are locked. Holding Alarm Reset for 3 seconds toggles the lock, so it is easy to trigger by accident. The lock is meant to prevent accidental changes.
What does U mean?
U appears briefly when the controls are unlocked, followed by the current temperature. It confirms the unlock worked. You can use the same press to lock it again when you are done.
Is L a sign of a failure?
No. It is a normal status. If the pads still do not respond after unlocking, then the control needs a look and we can test it.
Still unsure about L / U?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
