What Hi Temp light + buzzer means
On GE upright frost-free freezers with the older electronic control (FUF12, FUF14 and FUF17 era), the red Hi Temp light and the buzzer tell you the inside has climbed above 23 F. The light comes on at first plug-in and any time the freezer goes above that temperature. The buzzer sounds every hour until the temperature is back below 23 F, so you will hear it repeat.
Common causes of Hi Temp light + buzzer
- Door left ajar or gasket not sealing
- Warm food loaded in quantity
- Power interruption that warmed the interior
- Cooling not keeping up with the load
1. Push Alarm Reset to silence the buzzer. 2. Close the door fully and check nothing blocks it. 3. Avoid opening the freezer while it recovers. 4. Check the temperature display after a few hours. 5. If the light stays on, move food to another freezer and call us.
- If the freezer cannot get back under 23 F, the cause is in sealing, airflow or cooling.
- We check the door gasket, the fan and the cooling cycle in that order.
- Food safety is the concern, so we explain what we find and give a written price before repairing.
Other Freezer codes
Why is the red Hi Temp light on?
The inside is above 23 F. It also lights at first plug-in until the freezer cools. The buzzer repeats every hour until the temperature drops.
How do I stop the buzzer?
Push Alarm Reset. That silences it. If the temperature has not come down, the buzzer returns, because the problem is still there. If it was just a door left ajar, the light goes out once the freezer cools.
Is the food safe?
It depends on how long the freezer stayed warm. Check for thawing and use judgment. If packages have softened, treat them with caution. Do not refreeze anything that has fully thawed.
