What Control panel flashing means
On GE gas ranges with the Range or Gas Lockout feature, including earlier models and the Café CGS985, CGS990 and C2S985, the control panel flashes when Range Lockout is activated while surface burner knobs are still on. Lockout stops the gas flow, and the flashing reminds you to turn the burner knobs off. If a knob stays on, gas will flow to that burner again the moment lockout is deactivated, which is why turning every knob off first matters.
Common causes of Control panel flashing
- Surface burner knob left in an on position when lockout was activated
- Lockout activated for cleaning or child safety without checking the knobs
- Control still holding the lockout state after power returned
1. Turn every surface burner knob to OFF before doing anything else. 2. Only then deactivate Range Lockout using the steps in your owner's manual. 3. If you smell gas at any time, do not touch switches or light anything; leave the house and call the gas utility from outside. 4. Do not relight burners until the room has aired out.
- If the panel keeps flashing with every knob off, we check the lockout circuit and valve control on that range.
- We confirm each burner lights and shuts off properly and that there is no gas odor at the connections.
Other Range codes
Why is my gas range control panel flashing?
Range Lockout was turned on while at least one burner knob was on. Gas stops flowing and the panel flashes as a reminder to turn the knobs off before lockout is released.
What happens if I unlock with a knob still on?
Gas will flow again to any burner whose knob was left on. Turn all knobs off first, then deactivate lockout, to avoid unexpected flow of gas.
What if I smell gas?
Leave the house immediately without using switches or phones inside, and call the gas utility from outside. Do not return until they say it is safe. Then call us to inspect the range.
