What ERR / SENSOR ERROR means
On GE and GE Profile microwaves with sensor cooking, a sensor program ended because the door was opened before steam could be detected, or because steam was not detected in the maximum time. Countertop models such as the JES1657 and PEM31 show ERR. Over-the-range models such as the JVM7195 and PVM9179, and the PEB7226 countertop, show SENSOR ERROR. It is the same condition on different displays, and the food is usually fine.
Common causes of ERR / SENSOR ERROR
- Door opened before steam was sensed
- Food too small or too dry to give off steam
- Covered or sealed container that traps steam
- Steam sensor not reading
1. Press Cancel/Off to clear the message. 2. Do not open the door until steam is sensed and the time starts counting down. 3. If steam was not detected, use Cook Time to heat for more time. 4. Leave the food uncovered or vented so steam can escape.
- If the message appears every time with normal food, whether the steam sensor is reading stays unknown
- We check the sensor circuit and the vent path, and ordinary one-off messages need no repair

Why does my microwave show SENSOR ERROR with small snacks?
The sensor needs steam to know when food is done. Small or dry items may not give off enough, so the program ends with a message instead of a finished cycle.
Is ERR the same as SENSOR ERROR?
Yes. Countertop JES1657 and PEM31 models show ERR, while the over-the-range models and the PEB7226 show SENSOR ERROR. Both describe the same steam detection condition.
What do I do if the food is still cold?
Press Cancel/Off and use Cook Time to add heating time. The sensor program will not carry on after the message, so a timed cycle is the simplest way to finish.
