What Turn means
On GE microwaves with Weight Defrost, such as the JES1657SMSS, JVM3160RFSS and PEM31SFSS, the display shows Turn during the weight defrost cycle. It is a signal that the food should be turned over so it defrosts evenly. This is a normal prompt and not a failure. The cycle pauses until you act, and you resume it once the food has been turned.
Common causes of Turn
- Defrost cycle reached its turn-over point
- Door left closed so the prompt waits
- Food unevenly frozen
1. Open the door. 2. Turn the food over, and break apart any pieces that have thawed enough to separate. 3. Close the door and press Start to resume. 4. If you skip the prompt, the cycle may not finish properly.
- If Turn appears when no defrost program is running, whether the control is sending a wrong prompt stays unknown
- We check the control and the program; a normal defrost prompt needs no repair

What does Turn mean on my microwave?
It is a prompt during Weight Defrost telling you to turn the food over. Open the door, turn it, close the door and press Start to resume the cycle.
Can I ignore Turn and let it run?
You can, but the food may defrost unevenly, with some areas starting to cook while others are still frozen. Turning it is a few seconds of effort that avoids that.
Is Turn only on certain models?
It appears on GE microwaves that offer Weight Defrost, including the JES1657, JVM3160 and PEM31 series. Other microwaves may use a different prompt for the same step.
