What 17 means
On GE UltraFresh front-load washers in the GFW510, GFW550, GFW650 and GFW850 series, code 17 records that the drum did not reach its target speed within the time allowed during the dry-load weighing step, so the washer skipped ahead to the next part of the cycle. The control can log it when a cycle starts with already-wet clothes. Unless the display shows it on your model, it is found by a technician reading the stored error history. You may see slightly longer or odd-sounding spin-up at the start.
Common causes of 17
- Load that was wet or very heavy when the cycle began
- Drum turning with extra drag
- Motor drive or speed feedback
- Out-of-balance load at the start
1. Start the next cycle with dry clothes and a load that is not packed tight. 2. Spread items evenly so one heavy piece is not wrapped around the others. 3. Make sure the washer sits level and does not rock when you push on a top corner.
- If the code returns with a normal, dry, even load, the cause is probably not the clothes
- We check that the drum turns freely and that the drive reaches speed
- Any repair is quoted in writing first and carries a 30-day workmanship warranty
Other Washer codes
Did wet clothes cause code 17?
They can. If a cycle starts with soaked laundry, the weighing step may not reach target speed in time. Try a dry, evenly spread load before assuming a repair is needed.
Is code 17 harmful?
By itself it only means the washer moved on after the timeout. It is a note for the technician, not a shutdown, but repeats are worth checking.
Does code 17 affect the wash?
Mostly it changes how the washer weighs the load at the start. If it moves on early, the rest of the cycle usually still runs, though results can differ.
Still unsure about 17?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
