What 70 means
On GE UltraFresh front-load washers (GFW510, GFW550, GFW650 and GFW850 series, 2020 and newer), code 70 means the inverter volt-hertz start-up problem occurred five times during one cycle. The drive tries to start the motor, fails, and after five tries the control records the number. The number is stored in the error history for a technician, and on these models it can also appear on the display. Owners may hear humming, find the drum not turning or see a cycle that gives up.
Common causes of 70
- Motor failing to start under load
- Drum drag or jammed items
- Motor drive board output
- Wiring and connectors to the motor
1. Stop the cycle and take out a few wet items to lighten the drum. 2. Check with the washer off that the drum turns by hand and nothing is wedged between the drum and tub. 3. Do not remove panels; the motor and drive are not owner repairs.
- A motor that will not start can be a mechanical drag, the motor or the drive board, and a repeat needs testing
- We turn the drum, test the motor circuit and watch the start-up attempts
- A written price is approved before we replace any part, and repairs have a 30-day workmanship warranty
Other Washer codes
Is a humming drum code 70?
It can be. Humming while the drum stays still suggests the motor is trying and failing to start. Stop the cycle rather than let it retry.
Could my load matter?
A heavy or jammed load can stop a start, so lighten it and check. Letting the washer retry again and again can heat the motor, so we suggest stopping the cycle instead of waiting.
Should I let the washer keep trying?
No. Repeated start attempts do not help and add heat to the motor. Stop the cycle and note what you heard. It is also a useful detail when you describe the problem to us.
Still seeing 70?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
