What 85 means

Code 85 on a GE UltraFresh front-load washer (GFW510, GFW550, GFW650 and GFW850 series, 2020 and newer) means the voltage detected by the main control is outside the acceptable window, either too low or too high. The control then stops to protect its electronics. Technicians see the number in the stored error history, and the display can show it on these models. Owners may see a washer that shuts off, resets mid-cycle or will not start.

Common causes of 85

  • House voltage at the outlet
  • Loose or damaged cord, plug or outlet
  • Overloaded or shared circuit
  • Main control voltage sensing
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Plug the washer directly into a wall outlet, not an extension cord or power strip. 2. Stop using it and unplug it if the plug, cord or outlet looks scorched or hot. 3. Tell us if lights dim or other appliances act up when the washer runs.

! Why to stop there
  • Voltage trouble can come from the house supply or from the control misreading it, and the number does not separate them
  • We measure the outlet and check the cord, then test the control's reading
  • A written price comes first, and repairs carry a 30-day workmanship warranty
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

Is my outlet the cause?

It can be. A weak or overloaded circuit shifts the voltage, so we check it before the board. The outlet and cord are checked first, because a weak or noisy supply can shift the reading and trigger it.

Can I keep running it?

If it shuts off or the plug is warm, stop and have it inspected. Stop at once if the plug is warm, the cord is damaged or the washer shuts off repeatedly, and call us.

What counts as an acceptable voltage window?

The control expects the supply within a normal range. Too low or too high, it stops to protect itself, so a weak circuit can trigger it.
