What 29 means

On GE UltraFresh front-load washers (the GFW510, GFW550, GFW650 and GFW850 series, 2020 and newer), code 29 means the motor-drive processor failed its continuous self-check, which tests its memory, registers and clock. When the drive cannot trust itself, the control stops the motor. Only a technician reading the stored error history, or the display on these models, will show you the number itself. Owners usually see a washer that will not spin the drum, stops mid-cycle or will not start.

Common causes of 29

  • Motor drive board electronics
  • Connectors and wiring between the drive and main board
  • Power quality reaching the washer
  • Main control communication with the drive
✓ One safe check you can try

1. Note the cycle you were on and whether the washer lost power or stopped suddenly. 2. Check that the plug is fully seated and the outlet works, such as with another small appliance. 3. Do not open the back or base panels; the drive is not an owner repair.

! Why to stop there
  • A self-check failure points to the drive electronics, but a poor connection or supply issue can imitate it
  • We check the power at the outlet and the connections before deciding on the drive
  • You see a written price before we replace any board, and repairs have a 30-day workmanship warranty
Opening a panel yourself does not automatically cancel a manufacturer warranty, but it can cause accidental damage, and some manufacturers set their own service conditions. Check your warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
2929 questions
Is code 29 a problem with my clothes?

No. It concerns the electronics that run the motor, not the load, so changing the laundry will not help. That is why we check the outlet and connections first and only then look at the drive electronics.

Could a power dip trigger it?

Possibly, so we check supply and connections first, then the board. The drive board controls only the motor, so the control panel may still light up even while the drum will not turn.

What does the drive board do?

It controls how the motor starts, turns and stops. If it cannot trust its own memory or clock, the control shuts the motor down for safety.
