What Err + fast blue light means

On GE SmartWater water softeners with electronic demand control, such as the GXSH40V and GXSH45V, a flashing Err with the blue light flashing four times per second means the system found an electrical problem. That can involve the timer, the motor, the wiring or another electrical part. The alarm beeps every 30 seconds between 8 AM and 8 PM. Until it is dealt with, the softener may not regenerate properly, and the water can turn hard.

Common causes of Err + fast blue light

  • Loose or incorrect wiring under the control cover, especially after installation
  • Whether the motor runs and finishes its cycle
  • Transformer connection
  • Timer or control board

1. Press any button to silence the alarm. 2. Unplug the transformer from the wall outlet for a moment, then plug it back in. 3. The motor may run several minutes while the unit resets. 4. After a new installation, check for loose or incorrect wiring under the control cover; if Err returns, call us.

How soon does the error come back?

On current models it returns in about 8 minutes if the cause remains, and on older ones in about 6. That is how you know the reset did not solve it.

Is it safe to unplug the transformer?

Yes, it is the reset step the manual gives. Unplug the low-voltage transformer from the wall outlet for a moment, then plug it back in and let the motor finish.

Will my water be hard meanwhile?

Possibly, since the softener may not regenerate while the error is active. Tell us if you notice hard water, spotting or soap that does not lather.
