What 22 means
On GE Zoneline single-package vertical units of the AZ90/AZ91 generation, code 22 appears on heat pump models only. The control saw the outdoor coil stay below 30°F for 2 consecutive minutes, so it uses electric heat until the coil reaches 45°F. The room still gets warm, but from the electric elements instead of the heat pump. The display shows 22 with the history count beside it.
Common causes of 22
- Frost or ice on the outdoor coil in cold weather
- Outdoor coil sensor reading wrong
- Outdoor airflow blocked by debris or snow
- Defrost control not completing
1. Press ENTER to bring up the stored codes, then SCROLL through them. 2. Brush snow, leaves and debris off the outdoor grille by hand from outside. 3. Note whether the code appears mainly on cold, damp mornings. 4. Hold ENTER and SCROLL for 3 to 6 seconds if you want to clear the list afterward.
- Whether the coil is truly icing or the sensor misreads stays unknown until we check it in cold conditions
- We test the sensor and the defrost control against the real coil temperature before quoting anything
Other Room Air Conditioner codes
My AZ91 shows 22 in winter; is that normal?
It can be. In very cold, damp weather the outdoor coil can frost up, and the unit protects itself by switching to electric heat until the coil warms to 45°F. A few entries in the history are not alarming.
Is code 22 possible on cooling-only Zoneline models?
No. It applies to heat pump models only, so a cooling-only AZ90 with electric heat will never log it. If you are unsure which type you have, the model number on the data plate tells us.
How do I read the code on the display?
Press ENTER and the left two digits show the code, while the right two show the history count. Press SCROLL to step to the next stored entry, and write each pair down before clearing anything.
