What F5 means
On GE and Profile microwaves, including over-the-range and countertop models such as the JVM3160, JVM7195, JES1657 and PVM9179 series, F5 means the humidity sensor is shorted. It is the counterpart of F4, which reports the same sensor as open. A shorted reading means the control cannot trust the sensor-cooking results, so those functions may stop working. You will see F5 on the display, and the microwave may still run on a timer. This code is not listed for Advantium ovens.
Common causes of F5
- Humidity sensor circuit shorted
- Sensor wiring pinched or damaged
- Moisture reaching the connector
- Control board misreading the sensor
1. Open the door and let the oven air out and dry. 2. Turn the circuit breaker or fuse off for 30 seconds and restore it. 3. Try a timed heating test with a cup of water. 4. Skip the sensor-cook buttons for now. 5. If F5 comes back, schedule service.
- A dry oven does not fix a shorted sensor circuit.
- We test the wiring and the sensor before proposing a part.
- A written price comes first.

What does F5 mean on my GE microwave?
The humidity sensor is shorted, so the control cannot rely on its reading. Sensor-cook features may stop working until the circuit is repaired. Timed heating may still work.
Is F5 just another name for F4?
No, they are paired codes for the same sensor. F4 is open and F5 is shorted. Either way, the sensor circuit needs testing. We check wiring first.
Can I keep using the microwave with F5?
If it still heats on timed settings, many owners keep using it for simple tasks. We recommend having it checked, since the control is reporting a circuit problem.
Still seeing F5?
A technician diagnoses it on site and gives you the price in writing before any work starts.
