What LOCK light means
On GE and GE Profile ranges and wall ovens with separate clean and lock lights, the LOCK light comes on about 30 to 40 minutes into a clean cycle, when the oven reaches roughly 600°F. The door cannot be opened until the light goes out. The light can also glow after long high-temperature cooking, when the oven is too hot for the latch to move safely. Either way, the lock is a protective feature and releases on its own as the cavity cools.
Common causes of LOCK light
- Normal door lock during a self-clean cycle
- Cavity still too hot for the latch to release after long high-temperature cooking
- Latch motor waiting for a safe temperature before moving
1. Wait for the oven to cool; the door can be opened once the LOCK light goes out. 2. Do not try to force the door or the latch. 3. Keep the kitchen ventilated and pets away during cleaning. 4. Wipe out ash only after the light is off and the cavity is cool.
- If the LOCK light stays on long after the oven is cool, we check the lock motor, latch switch and temperature sensing.
- We also look at whether the clean cycle is ending properly.

Why is my oven door locked?
The oven is cleaning or still too hot after high-temperature use. The LOCK light means the latch is engaged and will release once the cavity cools down enough.
When does the LOCK light come on in a clean cycle?
Roughly 30 to 40 minutes in, as the oven approaches about 600°F. It stays on until the cycle ends and the oven cools, then the light goes out.
Can I stop the lock by canceling the cycle?
Canceling ends the cycle, but the door remains locked until the oven is cool enough. Wait for the LOCK light to go out before opening it.
